A Hadtörténelmi Közleményeket, a Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum negyedévente megjelenő tudományos folyóiratát a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia alapította 1888-ban a magyar hadtörténetírás fejlesztésére. Kisebb megszakításokkal (1898–1909, 1944–1953) azóta fennáll, 1954-től a Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum saját folyóirataként jelenik meg. Magyarország második legrégebbi társadalomtudományi orgánumaként a kezdetektől jelentős szerepet játszik a hazai (had)történetírás fejlődésében, a magyar hadtörténeti irodalom gazdagításában és mindmáig egyetlen publikációs fóruma a tudományág művelőinek. Évi négy számban (márciusban, júniusban, szeptemberben és decemberben), több mint ezer oldalon teszi közzé a magyar és a kapcsolódó egyetemes hadtörténelem új kutatási eredményeit (militaria hungarica). Alkalmanként a hadtörténelem kérdéseiről folytatott tudományos vitáknak is helyt ad, illetve évfordulókhoz kapcsolódóan tematikus számokkal jelentkezik. A folyóirat elismert a szakmai körökben, a tudományegyetemeken folyó történelemoktatásban és a szélesebb olvasóközönség körében is. A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia a folyóiratok között a legmagasabb „A” kategóriába sorolta.

A Szerkesztőség munkáját – a régi hagyományokhoz híven – tekintélyes szakemberekből álló szerkesztőbizottság és tanácsadó testület segíti. A folyóiratban kizárólag két független lektori vélemény alapján a szerkesztőbizottság által elfogadott írások jelennek meg. A Hadtörténelmi Közlemények tanulmányanyagát tekintve rendkívüli gazdagságban vizsgálja a magyar történelmet.

QUARTERLY OF MILITARY HISTORY

Quarterly of Military History, a quarterly scholarly journal of the Institute and Museum of Military History, was founded in 1888 by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences with the aim of advancing Hungarian military historiography. With minor interruptions (1898–1909, 1944–1953), it has been published continuously ever since; from 1954 onwards, it has appeared as the own journal of the Institute and Museum of Military History. As Hungary’s second-oldest social sciences periodical, it has played a significant role from the outset in the development of national (military) historiography, in enriching Hungarian military-historical literature, and it remains to this day the sole publication forum for scholars in this field. Appearing in four issues per year (March, June, September and December), and comprising more than one thousand pages annually, the journal publishes new research findings on Hungarian and related universal military history (militaria hungarica). It also occasionally provides a forum for scholarly debates on questions of military history and publishes thematic issues linked to anniversaries. The journal is recognised in professional circles, in university-level history education, and among the wider reading public alike. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences has classified it in the highest “A” category among academic journals.

The work of the Editorial Office is supported—true to long-standing tradition—by an editorial board and an advisory board composed of distinguished experts. Only contributions accepted by the editorial board on the basis of two independent peer reviews are published in the journal. In terms of its scholarly content, Quarterly of Military History examines Hungarian history with exceptional breadth and depth. Its rich sections devoted to sources and memoirs make the journal a kind of Hungarian historical source collection, and for decades it has assisted researchers by regularly publishing selected bibliographies of military science. The journal not only provides summaries in English, German, French and Russian, as well as a table of contents in five languages at the end of each article, but since 2015 it has also published full-length studies in the above-mentioned foreign languages.
